The area was purchased by John Turner in 1623. His youngest son, Sir William went to London to make his fortune in Wool. He was Knighted for helping the poor and giving King Charles a loan of £1100. In 1670 was made Lord Mayor of London. This is were the tale of Dick Whittington originated from.
He used his fortune to build the original Almshouses at Kirkleatham.
His Great Nephew,Cholmley, in 1740, enhanced them into the form we see today, in particular the Hospital meaning HOSPITALITY not medical. It has been modernised and the refurbishment was competed in 2002

A Time Capsule was placed in the grounds of Kirkleatham Almshouse Redcar.
