Situated in the North Yorkshire National Park.
Rosberry Topping was originally 1050 ft, But due to erosion and iron ore mining it is now only 1000 ft high
On top there used to be a hermitage called Wilfred’s Needle. but has long gone due to mining.
The most enduring legend concerns the sad fate of a young Northumbrian Prince Oswy, the son of King Osmund.
The King had been told Oswy would drown on his second birthday. So the day before the Princes birthday the
the King sent his Queen and son to the Hermits cave for safety. But the Queen fell asleep and when she woke
the Prince was missing. On surching she found him dead, drowned in the waters of Odinsberg spring which
has long gone. The Queen, who died just after, and her son were berried at Tivotdale which was renamed
Oswy-By-His Mother-Lay and is now known as Osmotherley just off the A19 just outside Middlesbrough
